The Station

1 Station Road is a Grade II listed building, and is situated in a prominent position in the centre of Colwyn Bay. Originally called The Station Hotel, and more recently known as The Central, the building was built in 1870 and in the early days of the town, it would have been the focal point of the landscape that travellers saw as they stepped off the train.

1 Station Road has remained a public house throughout its life; hotel rooms were offered until around the 1960s, and in the latter part of the 20th century a nightclub operated in the cellar.

Here’s a link to a short timelapse video of the transition:

Colwyn Bay Townscape Heritage Initiative approved a grant to aid the restoration of the building, ensuring the heritage features of this important building are preserved for the future. Work started in December 2014 and is nearing completion, with inappropriate alterations taken out and essential repairs being done on parts of the building such as the roof.

As fittings were removed, and rooms were stripped back, items from throughout the decades were recovered, including old pennies, milk bottles and a local apple seller’s crate.

Whilst cataloguing the building and matching exterior windows to the building that they had walked around, surveyors found that there were more windows than rooms. It turned out that after being used as hotel rooms for much of the 20th century, the owners then decided to shut up the 2nd floor of the building and remove the staircase entirely. The rooms were left as they were, complete with newspapers, old boots and posters on the wall. From these articles, we can determine that the rooms were closed up in the 1960s. Scroll through the gallery to see the photos of these hidden rooms.

The building will continue as a pub with the new addition of serving food, and will be managed by the same team that runs the successful pub, The Albert, in Llandudno.
